Platonic means intimate and affectionate but not sexual/romantic.
Example: Jon's best friend is David. They're really close, but not romantically involved. Their relationship is platonic.
I once used the word with the frontman of one of my favorite bands, and he totally didn't get it. It was very embarrassing.
